The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education on Monday, Feb. 24 appointed Nicole Bernard to fill a Board member vacancy now through April 2025. Bernard also is running uncontested for the District 58 Board of Education in the April 2025 election. It is expected that Bernard will seamlessly transition from completing this Board member vacancy role to a full four-year Board member term this spring.
“We are happy to welcome Ms. Bernard to the District 58 Board of Education,” said Board President Darren Hughes. “With her years of experience on the Financial Advisory Committee and her active involvement as a District parent, she has a history of being a strong supporter of our schools. I am confident she will be a tremendous asset to the District in her new role as a member of the Board of Education.”
In addition to the Board’s Financial Advisory Committee, Bernard also participates on the Highland Elementary PTA. She resides in Downers Grove with her husband and two children, ages 3 and 10. Her older child attends Highland School. Professionally, Bernard works in the finance sector.
“I thank the Board of Education for giving me this opportunity to serve the community. As a Board of Education member, I will work diligently to advance the school district's focus on student learning, staff recruitment and retention, and our District’s financial sustainability,” Bernard said. “There are and will continue to be headwinds for school districts, and I hope that my potential contributions will bring a balanced perspective that recognizes the community’s value on the neighborhood school approach in conjunction with low tax rates and uncertainty in state funding. Most importantly, I aim to spend the time necessary to be well-informed, thoughtfully listen and engage in dialogue, and represent the community.”
Bernard is filling the unexpired Board member term of Gregory Harris, who recently resigned for personal reasons. District 58 thanks Harris for his nearly eight years of service and dedication to the District 58 Board of Education.
