A message from Dr. Russell about schools closing

Dear District 58 Families and Staff,

Due to dangerous icy conditions, all District 58 schools will be closed today, Tuesday, Jan. 23, for in-person learning. A remote E-Learning Day will be held. Because our school buildings are closed, Champions before and after school care are also closed as well as all after-school activities.

Freezing rain and icy conditions have made conditions too treacherous for driving and walking. Many of the roads, parking lots, and sidewalks are impassible at this time despite salt being applied. While we expect conditions to improve later today, it is simply too dangerous for the morning commute. We recognize that this month has brought several severe weather events that have forced us to close schools, which creates additional challenges for our parents/guardians, students, and staff. Your understanding is greatly appreciated as we navigate these challenges together. Please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions.

As eager as we are to keep students physically in our school buildings, the safety of our students and staff must be our top priority.

Students will receive communication from their teachers and/or schools on how and when to connect and engage in e-learning.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please stay warm and safe.

Sincerely,
Dr. Kevin B. Russell
Superintendent of Schools
