This Herrick group of 7th and 8th graders love math and it shows. The Herrick students in advanced math classes placed Second among 60 middle schools in the recent Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Contest. The students scored a cumulative 118 points out of a possible 120. It was the third ICTM contest for the students, who were from Andrew Schmidt’s and Daniel Dvoracek’s Advanced Math classes, and this recent Second Place bumped Herrick up to Fourth Place overall this year. Congratulations!
The competition consists of both a team and individual component.
Herrick’s top two teams consisted of:
- Team 1 (which received 20 out of 20 possible points): Olivia T., Nicole L., Philip M., Mathew J., Reece H.
- Team 2 (which received 18 out of 20 possible points): Raymond C., Max G., Lucas D., Elijah S.
In the individual competition, the following students were recognized for placing in the top 10 out of the 80 Herrick students who took the exam. Receiving perfect scores were Mathew J., Nicole L., Jacoby J., Cassie V., Vivian J., Carter G., Zachary W., Baker G., Sajan K., Peyton S., Lucas D., Max G., Isaak S., Raymond C., Nathan I.
Contest questions reflect the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and spirit of problem-solving as well as the Illinois State Standards. The team competition promotes cooperation among students and encourages the use of calculators. Problems are written to challenge student thinking, leading to further appreciation and exploration of mathematics.
Tallying up all three state contests, Herrick finished 4th place overall. We are very proud of this year’s participants and all that they have accomplished!
