End-of-year message from Dr. Russell

End-of-year message from Dr. Russell

Dear District 58 Staff and Families:

I hope this letter finds you well. It's hard to believe the 2020-2021 school year has officially concluded. On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to thank you for your partnership with District 58.

Students, staff and families have worked tirelessly throughout this school year in the face of unprecedented challenges. The year was filled with highs and lows, along with twists and turns. I recognize that there were times when we may not have always agreed on the best path moving forward. However, we stuck together and persevered through adversity. Everyone worked hard to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of our students. I am truly grateful that our District did not experience the turmoil that played out in many other districts.

I would especially like to thank all of the volunteers who supported those in need through a very challenging time. These groups included the District’s PTAs, the Education Foundation of District 58, Blessings in a Backpack, and other community groups.

Despite the challenges of the past school year, the District made significant strides implementing the Strategic Plan. A new math curriculum was adopted, communications were enhanced, and facility improvement recommendations were brought forward. The District Leadership Team will continue to monitor the progress in all three areas of our plan as we head into the upcoming school year and beyond. Additionally, the District will reconvene the Citizen Task Force for Facilities over the summer to discuss the next steps needed to continue to address the District’s urgent facilities needs.

Over the summer the District will continue to meet with neighboring school districts, the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, the DuPage County Health Department, and the Illinois State Board of Education to determine the parameters for schools in the fall. We will continue to share information throughout the summer as it is made available. Our goal and vision continue to be to conduct school in as normal a manner as possible.

On a personal note, I could not be more grateful to have the opportunity to serve as your Superintendent. Along with the Board of Education and staff, we are fully committed to providing the best educational experience for the students of District 58. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of working with your student(s), and we look forward to next year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin B. Russell
Superintendent of Schools
