Due to this event's popularity, we added a second webinar on Feb. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m. The Feb. 17 event is full.
Downers Grove Grade School District 58 invites parents and guardians to attend a free virtual webinar, “Talking to Children About Sexual Abuse.” The webinar will take place on two different days:
- Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 6:30-8 p.m. (FULL)
- Wednesday, Feb.24 from 6:30-8 p.m.
Please register here to attend the Feb. 24 webinar by Friday, Feb. 11. Registrants will receive a Zoom link prior to the webinar.
District 58 will co-host this webinar with Darkness to Light, an international organization that empowers adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse through awareness, education and stigma reduction. The event will supplement the age-appropriate Erin’s Law sexual abuse lessons students receive at school and give parents tools to start these sensitive conversations with their children at home. The webinar will follow this format:
6:30-7:30 p.m.: Carol Hogue from Darkness to Light will present tips and approaches parents and guardians can take to have an age-appropriate conversation with their children about sexual abuse, and District 58 Assistant Superintendent for Special Services Jessica Stewart will lead a conversation on Erin’s Law, which is the District’s sexual abuse prevention curriculum. The District provides age-appropriate lessons to equip students with knowledge and skills to protect themselves. The Erin’s Law curriculum teaches students body awareness and self-advocacy, as well as skills to recognize good and bad touches and how to tell a trusted adult when something seems wrong. Every District 58 principal will email families with information on Erin’s Law prior to initiating the curriculum this year at school. All students, including both hybrid and full remote students, will participate in Erin’s Law lessons unless a family opts their child out.
7:30 p.m.: Registered webinar participants will receive a passcode to participate in a self-guided online parent training through Darkness to Light. Participants can choose to complete the training at this time, or on their own at a different time.
Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities for guests to ask questions. In addition, parents and guardians may also contact their school principal or Jessica Stewart (jstewart@dg58.org) with any questions they may have about Erin’s Law or child sexual abuse prevention.
Please note: this event is open to all District 58 parents and guardians. In order to participate in the Darkness to Light training for free, guests must register here by Friday, Feb. 11. If a guest does not register, they may still participate in the presentation portion of the webinar; they may also participate in the training on their own at a cost of $5.
