Dear District 58 Community,
The Downers Grove Police Department has informed District 58 that we may end the “Secure Building and Teach” at Belle Aire, Henry Puffer, Herrick, Highland and Pierce Downer schools today at 12:45 p.m. Please note, the Downers Grove Police Department is still actively investigating the arson incident, but we’ve been informed that there is no direct threat posed to our students. The police will post investigation updates here.
Out of an abundance of caution, District 58 will not permit students at these five schools to go outside for recess this afternoon; however, the schools will proceed with a normal afternoon dismissal. There will be an increased police presence near the affected schools. Should parents choose to pick up their children from school, instead of permitting them to take the bus or walk, please make the proper arrangements with the school.
Please be advised that there may increased vehicle traffic around these five schools this afternoon. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this precautionary measure. Sincerely, Downers Grove Grade School District 58

Dear District 58 Parents and Guardians,
We wanted to make all of our parents aware that there is police activity taking place on the north side of town this morning. It is not school-related, and all students are safe.
The Downers Grove Police Department informed us this morning that there was police activity on the north side of town related to an arson fire. Out of an abundance of caution, the police initially advised us to enact a "Secure Building and Teach" at Belle Aire, Herrick, Highland and Pierce Downer schools. Due to new information, the police more recently asked us to include Henry Puffer in the “Secure Building and Teach” as well.
During a “Secure Building and Teach,” all exterior doors remain closed and locked, and no one may enter or leave the building. We promptly sent email and text messages to all parents at the five affected schools with information regarding the "Secure Building and Teach." Downers Grove North sent a similar message to their families as well. When the matter is resolved, we will promptly send a follow up message to all parents.
While the “Secure Building and Teach” only affects five schools, we realize that District 58 is a close-knit community, and we wanted to ensure that all families receive the same information for peace of mind and to prevent rumors from forming.
Please note, we want you all to first and foremost know that all students are safe, and the "Secure Building and Teach" is a precautionary measure until the police apprehend the individual who caused the residential arson fire.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Downers Grove Grade School District 58
