The Seesaw app allows students and teachers to create digital student learning portfolios, which can be shared with parents in real-time. District 58 schools, including Indian Trail School, use Seesaw to complement learning, enhance parent communication and provide formative assessment information for teachers, students and parents.
During the January School Board meeting, Principal Robin Bruebach gave this presentation, which highlighted some of the ways Seesaw has positively affected her school.
For example, Indian Trail kindergarten teacher Kristy Hopkins incorporates Seesaw into everyday learning. She recently challenged students to create a cake with cups, name the shape and explain their pattern on Seesaw. Here's an example. The students shared this project with their parents via Seesaw.
"We would've never been able to share this with families without Seesaw!"
Mrs. Hopkins said. Mrs. Hopkins also recently asked students to read a poem using the Seesaw pointing tool. This allowed her to evaluate each students' reading fluency, and it showed each student's parents how well the student could read. Here's an example.
Finally, students can use Seesaw in combination with iPad apps to present their learning in a creative format. Mrs. Hopkins' students recently demonstrated their communication, art, creativity, technology, reading comprehension, English-language arts and social studies skills during a president curriculum unit. Students read about and discussed different presidents in class. They then created masks that resembled their favorite president. Finally, they used the Chatterpix app to create a video that shared fun facts about their president. They proudly shared their videos with their parents and teacher, who had the opportunity to view and comment on the student's work! Here are two great student examples: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln.
