Mrs. Lyons, a Whittier fifth grade teacher, invited School Board Members and Legislative Committee Co-Chairs Kirat Doshi and Elizabeth Sigale to listen to her students’ presentations on the essential question, “Why do laws continue to evolve?” Students picked a topic that they felt strongly about, such as gun laws, and discussed why it was important with their peers. They then presented their research to their classmates, teacher and School Board! The students did an outstanding job asserting their opinions on many different issues. They also demonstrated their learning by asking questions, sharing their perspective, respectfully and thoughtfully debating, and considering additional information.
