District 58 schools earn a total of $20,500 through mall contests
Downers Grove Grade School District 58 schools won a total of $20,500 this year through contests sponsored by two local shopping malls.
Yorktown Center staff visited Highland School on Friday, June 1 to present the school with a $10,000 check for winning first place in the Yorktown Center School Bucks program. The check presentation took place during Highland’s all-school meeting on Friday afternoon.
“I am so proud of our community and PTA’s efforts to win this contest!” said Highland Principal Bridget Moore. “We appreciate Yorktown Center’s commitment to education, and we look forward to using the prize money to improve our school.”
The Yorktown Center School Bucks program awards shoppers points based on each dollar spent at Yorktown stores and restaurants. Shoppers could choose which elementary school to award their points. District 58 schools each placed in the top five:
First Place: Highland School -- $10,000 prize
Second Place: Henry Puffer School -- $4,000 prize
Third Place: Belle Aire School -- $3,000 prize
Fourth Place: Lester School -- $2,000 prize
Fifth Place: Fairmount School -- $1,000 prize
In addition, Fairmount School earned eighth place in the Promenade Bolingbrook’s Shopping 4 Students program, winning the school $500.
The schools will each use the prize money to purchase new resources to enhance their school. For example, Highland plans to use their $10,000 winnings for playground enhancements, and Henry Puffer intends to give the money to the Puffer-Hefty PTA’s Year End Gift program, which awards staff grants to enhance the school.
