District 58 will partner with the PTA and library to support book clubs
Attention bookworms! Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will once again host the Parent-Led Summer Book Club Program for students entering grades 1-6 next school year. This is just one of the many summer learning opportunities offered by District 58 in partnership with the PTA and the Downers Grove Public Library to support students to continue their learning and academic exploration over the summer.
“I am very excited for this year’s Parent-Led Summer Book Club Program!” said Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli. “This popular program motivates children to continue reading throughout their summer vacations and encourages a passion for reading through fun book club discussions with friends. The program also offers parents all the tools they need to make leading a summer book club fun and easy. I am proud that District 58 can support this program.”
District 58 launched the Parent-Led Summer Book Club Program in 2015 as one of its new summer learning opportunities. The District invites parents to volunteer to lead a summer book club with their child and his/her friends. As a book club parent leader, all you need to do is form a group of friends and host the fun. The rest will be organized for you!
District 58 expects significant interest in summer book clubs, so please register as soon as possible to ensure a spot. Here are four simple steps to leading your book club!
1. Form the club. The ideal book club size is 4-6 students. Book clubs are limited to 10 students.
2. Register your book club. District 58 will accept registrations until Monday, May 22 or when space fills up, whichever comes first. District 58 will confirm book club reservations via email on or before Wednesday, May 24. Register at http://tinyurl.com/DG58BookClubSignup17.
3. Attend the book club kickoff meeting. The meeting will take place Wednesday, June 7 at 7 p.m. at the Longfellow Center, 1435 Prairie Ave. If you cannot attend, please contact Georganne Law at glaw@dg58.org by Thursday, June 1. Parents will learn additional information and receive the following:
- Book sets for each book club participant to use this summer. View the 2017 Book List. Note: Book lists are organized by grade level, rather than theme, this year.
- Guiding questions and discussion starters to aid book club leaders.
4. Host your book club! When and where you host your book club is up to you and your book club. Book club meetings can be hosted weekly, bimonthly or on a different schedule. They can be held at your home, at a park, at the public library or at another fun location that is convenient for you and your club. District 58 hopes that summer book clubs are easy to lead and lots of fun for both students and our parent leaders.
