Downers Grove District 58 is holding a Parent Education series this summer that will help parents develop some fresh and targeted strategies for supporting their children in a variety of developmental areas. These sessions are intended to provide thoughts and suggestions around new ways to address areas that parents may be struggling with and to continue to support students across the summer months with integrated learning opportunities in the home. The sessions will be held 6-7 p.m. on Wednesdays via the video platform Zoom. An optional Q+A session will follow the presentation.

Navigating virtual platforms
Targeted age: Parents of children ages 7-10 or grades 1st through 5th grade.
This presentation is for parents who are trying to help their children navigate the new social landscape of virtual platforms like Zoom, Google Meets, email and texts. This presentation will give some suggestions for social rules you can teach your child for when they are engaged in either social or academic virtual meetings or interactions. The purpose of this presentation will be to provide ideas for social rules, strategies for helping your child practice and use social rules when on a virtual platform, and how to help them problem-solve tricky social situations commonly occurring on virtual meeting and interaction platforms.

Using positive behavior management strategies
Targeted age: Parents of children ages 3-14.
This session is for parents who are seeking to find a more peaceful home environment, where behavior is managed using positive supports. This webinar will give some suggestions for establishing routines, using positive behavioral management strategies, and fostering independence in the home. The purpose of this webinar will be to enhance practices you might already be using in your home, and to learn new strategies that you can try this summer.

Developing fine and gross motor skills
Targeted age: Parents of children pre-K – early elementary.
This will include an overview of fine and gross motor development and a review of ages at which most typically developing children meet fine and gross motor milestones. Fine and gross motor activity suggestions will be provided for preK – early elementary aged children.

Interactive activities that encourage problem solving and attention
Targeted age: Parents of children whose developmental levels are between ages 1 and 8 years of age.
Learn ways to expand your child’s academic skills through interactive, hands-on activities that encourage problem solving, critical thinking and attention. We will share some of our favorite toys and games as well as play schemes and materials you have around your home to encourage learning. This workshop is targeted for parents of children whose developmental levels are between ages 1 and 8 years of age.
