WELCOME TO WHITTIER SCHOOL
Thank you for visiting the Whittier School website. We have a long tradition of academic achievement, student participation, and parent involvement. Whittier prides itself on the ability to enhance the lives of our students and maintain a positive role in the community by providing a respectful, nurturing, and challenging environment that will enable each child to reach his/her full potential. We strive to create the best learner-focused classrooms possible in order to meet the needs of each of our students. Whittier is a great place to learn!
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! It is especially exciting to start this school year at Whittier School, as this is our 90th Anniversary. The first students to Whittier walked through the doors in August 1928, and this year our 90th class of students will walk through the main entrance doors on the first day of school. Our goal is to continue the long-standing reputation of educational excellence. As always, our faculty and staff have been preparing for a terrific school year.
This school year, we will continue to implement small group instruction, emphasizing Guided Reading and Guided Math. Technology integration will continue to progress throughout Whittier as we continue to use iPads, Apple TVs, and SmartBoards. The 1:1 iPad program will be refreshed this school year, and all students in grades 1 through 6 will receive an updated iPad, and Kindergarten will have a 1:2 iPad ratio. Social Emotional Learning will continue to emphasize school and classroom community through Classroom/Morning Meetings, Second Step, and Bullying Education and Prevention. We will also continue to work with students on goal setting. Taking ownership and responsibility for learning is key in the academic growth and improvement in students.
This year, our school theme is “Choose KIND.” As we continue to strengthen our Whittier School community, we will recognize the importance of understanding that we are all unique individuals with our own unique talents, interests and values that we bring to the table. As we continue to support and cultivate diversity, inclusivity and acceptance throughout our school community, it is so important that we all continue to respond in a positive, appropriate and meaningful way. Our WHITTIER Families will continue and grow during this school year.
The school is the heart of every village. Teachers are responsible to teach and educate our children. Students are responsible to try their best and learn from the experiences afforded them. Parents are responsible to insure that their children are prepared and ready for each school day. The Community is responsible to support the overall educational process. Together, we will all work to achieve educational success for all our Whittier students!
We are very thankful for all the parent support we continue to receive at Whittier throughout the years. Our PTA has made it possible for us to replace the sound system in the gymnasium. Our next projects will be new wall mats for the gym, the exploration of an outdoor classroom space, and a new exterior school sign. A special thanks to members of MAVinS (Mothers Against Violence in Schools) who came in over the summer and gave our Intermediate bathrooms a total makeover. We all work best when we work together!
Thank you for the support and confidence you give us in educating your children!
