Mathematics

Math Core Curricular Resources

District 58 uses two core resources for math instruction. Bridges in Mathematics is used in kindergarten through fifth grade and Big Ideas Math is used in sixth grade through eighth grade. Both curricular resources focus on developing mathematicians that flexibly use strategies in problem solving and that have a strong number sense foundation.

Bridges in Mathematics Grades K-5

To help parents and guardians understand the new curriculum and better support their child's learning at home, District 58 created three parent education videos.

Learn more about the concepts, models, and strategies in your child’s grade level by visiting Bridge’s Family Support Page.

Looking to engage in more practice and problem solving activities with your child? Visit Bridge’s Math at Home website for unit aligned games and activities.

Big Ideas Grades 6-8

If you would like to preview a portion of the curriculum, please visit Big Ideas Learning.

Math Acceleration

District 58 offers acceleration opportunities in mathematics instruction to students who meet an established set of eligibility criteria.  Additional information can be found by clicking here.

The Domains of Common Core Mathematics

Mathematical learning in District 58 begins with the Standards for Mathematical Practice from the Common Core State Standards. This is a framework for approaching mathematical challenges and using the necessary habits of mind to identify the problem, plan a course of action to address the challenge, develop viable solutions to the problem, and persevere when options do not work. While these practices were developed for Mathematics, they apply in all types of learning situations regardless of the content being studied.

The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics focus on 10 unique domains for which students need comprehensive learning experiences. Each of these domains focus on skills and competencies which students need to master. In District 58, many of our students are not only working toward the grade level standard, but also beyond the grade level standard. As such, our learning experiences are centered around the domains themselves allowing students to have learning experiences at their instructional level and promoting their growth within each domain and anchor standard.

Counting and Cardinality: This is the skill in which students identify number of objects, learn the names of numbers, and develop correspondence between objects and number names. Typically children begin these skills in kindergarten or earlier.

Expressions & Equations: This is the process of algebraic study. Students will analyze and calculate patterns using single and multi-variable problems. This domain studies the relationships among points, lines and linear equations. Students typically work on this domain in sixth through eighth grades.

Functions: This is the process of determining the relationship between input and output. Students define, compare and model these relationships. Children typically work on this domain in eighth grade.

Geometry: This domain focuses on the identification and relationships of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects. Concepts include identifying objects, labeling components of objects, deriving mathematical connections within objects, and calculating relationships within objects. Students typically work on this domain during throughout elementary, middle and high school.

Measurement & Data: This domain uses the physical act of taking information about an object, recording this information, and using this information to develop an understanding of a situation. Students will work on concepts such as time, money, length, direction, volume, estimation and interpretation of data. Students typically work on this domain during their elementary school learning experiences.

Numbers & Operations – Base 10: This domain focuses on the relationship between numbers including place value, sequence and decimals. Students studying this domain will need to demonstrate both identification of these numbers and how to use these numbers in computation. Children typically work on this domain during their elementary school learning experiences.

Numbers & Operations – Fractions: This domain focuses on the naming, relationships and computation of numbers utilizing the language of fractions. Children typically work on this domain during their third through fifth grade learning experiences.

The Number System:  This domain culminates the Numbers & Operations – Base 10, Numbers & Operations – Fractions, and Operations & Algebraic Thinking domains. As students focus on the Number System, they analyze patterns of all rational numbers and irrational numbers. They perform calculations for these challenges as appropriate. Students typically work on this domain in sixth through eighth grades.

Operations & Algebraic Thinking: This is the process of identifying patterns and solving problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This domain includes symbolization and solving problems within the context of situations. Students typically work on this domain during their elementary school learning experiences.

Ratios & Proportional Relationships: This is the language in which two or more objects can be compared to each other. Children typically focus on these concepts in sixth and seventh grades.

Statistics & Probability: This is the study of how information comes together, the patterns that can be derived from the information, and the level of variance that can be identified within the information. Students identify samples, populations and models of interpretation within this domain. Students typically work on this domain in sixth through eighth grades.
