Activities

Band:

Band is comprised of 5th and 6th grade students learning to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, including the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or xylophone.  Band members meet with the band teacher once a week during school hours.  Lessons include introduction and drill of fundamentals, as well as sectional rehearsal of full band music.  In addition, all band students attend a large group rehearsal once per week after school. These rehearsals provide a large ensemble experience for students, and also serve as time to prepare music for a winter concert and a spring concert. Band members start learning in 5th grade and continue on into 6th grade and middle school. Teacher sponsor: Christine Kaminski

Downers Grove Children’s Choir:

The Downers Grove Children’s Choir is open to all 5th and 6th grade students in District 58.  The Fairmount music teacher will share pertinent information with students in the Fall each school year.  

District 58 Musical:

The Downers Grove District 58 musical is a performance opportunity for 3rd and 4th grade students. Details about this opportunity will be available in the Fall.  

Orchestra:

Orchestra is comprised of 4th, 5th and 6th grade students interested in learning to play a stringed instrument, including the violin, viola, cello or bass. Orchestra members meet with the orchestra teacher once a week during school hours.  Lessons include drills of fundamentals and sectional rehearsal of orchestra music. In addition, all orchestra students attend one large group rehearsal once per week after school. These rehearsals provide a large ensemble experience for students, and also serve as time to prepare music for the two evening concerts that students participate in during the year. Orchestra members start learning in 4th grade and continue on in 5th grade, 6th grade and middle school levels. Teacher sponsor: Colleen Eakley and Evangeline Tuohy

Run Club: 

Fairmount’s Run Club is open to all 2nd-6th grade students.  Participating students will walk or run a pre-marked course in the grass and track their laps to see how far they can run during the session. Teacher Sponsors: Colleen Brejcha and Annabeth Neimann

Student Council:

The Fairmount Student Council is comprised of student representatives from the 4th through 6th grades. Students in 5th and 6th grades may run for office and are elected by their classmates. The Council meets every few weeks to discuss spirit days, fundraising events, service projects and charitable contributions. The Council has supported the Downers Grove FISH Pantry, Metropolitan Family Services, and The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation among other charities. Spirit Days range from “Sports Team Day” to “Wacky Day.”  Teacher Sponsors: Alison Glennon and Stephanie Quigley 

Yearbook:

Open to 5th and 6th grade students, Yearbook Club meets throughout the school year to produce a high-quality yearbook for the school.  Students write captions, edit layouts, take pictures and promote yearbook sales.  Teacher Sponsor: Mattie Garrison and Jen Mejdrech
