Oktoberfest set Sept. 16 and 17; Calling volunteers

Oktoberfest needs volunteers! Help out at the Downers Grove District 58 Foundation’s Oktoberfest and get free admission. The popular family event, now in its 4th year, will feature traditional German fare and beverages. The festival will also offer a Kids Zone, kids karaoke, a high school brat-eating contest, a high school donut-eating contest and community entertainment.

Schools help Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

The school communities in District 58 pitched in to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in south Texas. Students in all District 58 schools participated in “Hats for Houston” on Sept. 1, raising roughly $12,500 for Hurricane Harvey relief. We visited Fairmount, Hillcrest, Indian Trail, Pierce Downer, O’Neill and Whittier on opening day and found families seeing their children off to school, teachers meeting their new students, classrooms organizing supplies, students getting to know each other and classes jumping into learning.

Whittier new playground
